Even though trekkers and hikers consider backpacks to be an
essential part of the whole experience, however when it comes to loading it,
many never pay much heed. Trekkers most of the time randomly stuff in all the
gear before they set off for the adventure. When it comes down to how you
should load a backpack, organization
is the key.
Proper organization in your packs equals to easier backpacking trips. Not only will proper pack organization
eliminate the possibility of forgetting things but will also allow lessening of
weight through omitting any extra luxury items that may not necessarily be
needed. In addition a properly balanced pack will offer stability, comfort and
convenience in carrying it as well.
A proper pack in terms of size should be initially chosen so
that packing of all your needed items becomes easy to manage and carry as well.
The size of pack will depend mostly on the duration of your trip. The longer
the trip, the bigger the pack you will require. Make a list of things you will
be
taking with you and accordingly choose a pack.
Proper Distribution of
Weight
The basic organization when you load a backpack is to distribute the weight in a manner that makes
it feel light and easy to carry. Backpacking is not about
simply stuffing your things in rather when done in the perfect way, can make a
heavy weighted pack feel much lighter than it really is. The
weight
distribution system of packs varies depending on whether you are trial hiking
or off the trail.
Internal Framework
Packs
In internal framework packs, which is becoming a standard for
backpacks nowadays, heavy items should be placed in the center, high in the
pack between the blades of the shoulder, clinging close to the back. This
organization is suited best when you are trail hiking, as arranging your heavy
items in this manner, puts the weight on the hips of the person carrying the
pack.
In the same manner, when you are walking off the trial, heavy
items should then be placed a little lower on the back. This will lower the
center of gravity and further stabilize your walk on the rough terrains.
External Framework
Packs
In external framework packs, which are recommended to be used
for trial hiking only, heavy items should be packed close to the back and on
the top of the pack. This again places the weight on the hips and helps in
maintaining an upright stance.
Tips for Ultralight
Pack Loading
A simple way to experience ultralight backpacking
is through loading the heaviest of your equipments centered and close to your
back. The medium weight items should be placed on the top and outer side of the
pack, while the light weight gear, such as sleeping bags, etc should be placed
at the bottom of the pack.
Points to Remember
1)
Although stated above is the ideal way to organize and
pack your backpack, however remember never to overload your pack. The weight of
the pack should never exceed 25% to 30% of your body’s ideal weight. Experienced backpackers can carry a little
more weight than specified here, however new trekkers and hikers should stick
to this standard to experience a comfortable trip.
2)
As essential as it is to know how to load a backpack,
equally important it is to access them whenever you need something. Of course
organization will allow you to reach the item instantly, however another way to
reach those lower down items is to opt for a front loading backpack. Most of
the packs used for trekking are top loaded, however you can also find front
loading packs, which makes access to everything in the pack easier and instant.
If you load a backpack following these rules
will ensure a safe, comfortable and light weighted trip.
